A man paddles a canoe, golden wedding ring glinting in the sun. He’s wearing business casual on this brown-water river.

His wife, on the other end of the canoe, wearing all the correct polyester-outdoor-clothes, eyes him.

David smells his sleeve.

“It smells like turtle where you splashed me, Marie,” he says.

“That’s why you don’t wear your work clothes on a canoe trip, David.”

“I wore these in case we got stuck out here and I had to forage for food for you and our child. I hate feeling like a stranger in new, crispy clothes.” He dips his hand in the water thoughtfully.

“My new clothes are pretty crispy…” Marie jogs in place with just her arms. Her fishing shirt makes swishing sounds.

“Exactly. So, could you try not to splash me as you paddle? I have work tomorrow and turtle smell does not come out easily.”

“You could just wear something else on Monday, David.”

“I have a big meeting, and I want to wear the clothes I’m used to.”

“Honey, you always want to be in that outfit.”

David shrugs. “I’m blessed to have a calendar full of important days.”

Marie smirks mischievously. She splashes David with her paddle on purpose.
