Happy Money Is Made Without Hacks, Scripts, or Maps

You can’t sustain who you aren’t

I had a call with a huge potential writing client. They made the offer.

“Double that,” I said. I was surprised at my own words. The offer was good — but I had a bigger number in mind. I have some clients now — why not push the envelope?

“Excuse me?” he said. Obviously, no one had ever said that to them. These guys hire writers all the time.

“Double it. I’d do it for double what you just said.”

“Let me get back to you….” After the weekend, they accepted my offer and sent the contracts over. I was shocked to even hear from them again.

Being unattached to the outcome just doubled my outcome.

No Scripts

The point of this story is not to say, “Announce ‘DOUBLE IT!’ in every meeting from now on.” It’s to say you can say exactly what you feel — even to professionals.

I never knew this tidbit.

Scripts are limits. They are good if you have heatstroke and can’t remember your name — but otherwise, it’s better to assess the situation as it develops. Say what you actually feel. Use your intuition.
