We All Still Believe in Flood Myths

Climate Change is the newest flood in a long history of floods.

This morning I cooked myself some eggs. They were “cage-free,” but, what the hell does that even mean? I finished off the carton and threw it away among a pile of other trash I’ve accumulated since only yesterday.

I get 2 packages from Amazon. Some “final touches” to my apartment — woven cotton storage thingies that go in my bathroom so my grooming stuff isn’t strewn all over.

I “recycle” the boxes they came in — but I read an article somewhere that it’s pretty much the same as throwing them away. I feel discomfort. If I wasn’t paying attention, I wouldn’t notice.

There’s a small voice in my head.

I almost can’t hear it.

It says, “The flood is coming.”

We Still Think in Religious Terms

Modern people are funny.

We smirk at fundamentalists who believe in an old god, telling them, “Religion is stupid!” and then go to a baseball game and become enraged at the player wearing the symbols of the enemy. This, we think, is completely rational. Not like those lunatics who think there’s a bearded man in the sky.
